Item Title:Budget & Fiscal Policy - Juror Pay
Submitted By:Wallace Hardgrove, Executive Director, Budget and Fiscal Policy Department (915) 546-2262
Subject:Pursuant to Government Code § 61.001 (b), set the juror pay at $7 for each day or fraction of a day while a person is in attendance in Court as a prospective juror but not selected, and $40 for each day or fraction of a day if selected for jury duty and sworn in to sit on a jury panel during FY 2022.
Background:Prospective jurors are to retain their juror badge to be relinquished to the County parking attendant in order to receive free parking. Jurors selected will have their juror badges collected by the corresponding court bailiff and will be responsible for payment of their daily parking. As per Texas Local Government Code, Section 61.001 (b)during the preparing and approving of the annual budget the Commissioners Court shall determine the daily amount of reimbursement for a person who reports for jury service.Originally the goal of the court was to grow the partial day amount when not selected for the Jury from $6 to $10 by $1 per year over the span of four years. In FY 2020, the court increased this amount by $1, from $6 to $7. At this time, in light of the current financial situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is being recommended that this annual increase be suspended until further notice.
Fiscal Impact:The recommended annual appropriation of $552,561 will be funded within the District Clerk's Office.
Recommendation:

The recommendation is for Commissioners Court to approve and authorize to maintain the suggested juror pay and free parking for jurors during FY 2022 pursuant to Government Code § 61.001 (b).
