| Background: | Through a partnership between the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds deobligated from other state programs are being diverted to all border Counties who participate and receive Texas Colonia Self Help Center (SHC) funds to respond to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding was awarded as a one-time grant by TDA for financial assistance to colonia residents.
Funds may be programmed to address the housing (mortgage only not rental), utility, food needs and/or other needs for colonia/rural residents in the County. The maximum amount of assistance per residence is $2,000. It can be disbursed as a direct payment to the mortgage and/or utility company or can be used to purchase and distribute grocery gift cards. Up to 135 households may benefit from the assistance.
