In 2007, the Texas Legislature authorized a Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) to address a growing gap in funding for this service. The funds have been dedicated to shorten waiting lists, add weekend meals or to meet an increase in fuel and food costs without cutting services to those in need. The County, as an eligible service provider, first applied for funding in 2009 and has made an application each subsequent year to ensure that it receives the benefit of this resource. The level of funding is tied to the number of unreimbursed meals served. The decrease in FY19 grant award is due to a higher amount of reimbursed meals served during FY18.  TDA requires each applicant to identify the meals served and the reimbursement sources to avoid duplicate payment for meals reimbursed by the Area Agency on Aging and the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.

This award is also acknowledged in a Resolution that is read during the Commissioners Court meeting that authorizes the application for funding. The contract term begins in February and ends in January of the following year.

This year's award is a reduction of approximately $10,000 from the previous year's award.  This is due to a larger percentage of meals being reimbursed by other sources.  TDA is a gap fund grant that only reimburses what other grant sources do not.
