Item Title:Public Works - Accept live potted Christmas trees after Holidays
Submitted By:Norma R. Palacios, Executive Director, Public Works Director (915) 546-2015
Subject:Approve and authorize the County Public Works Department to accept live potted Christmas trees after the holidays to be used at County Parks and other County Facilities.
Background:Nationwide, 5 to 7 percent of the 32.4 million trees sold last holiday season were living varieties, according to National Christmas Tree Association, living trees are brought into the home for about 10 days, then replanted after Christmas.  And while the idea has been around for more than a decade, live evergreens have become even more popular in recent years, thanks largely to the marketing efforts of growers and home-garden centers. Also known as “treecycling,” the act of recycling a Christmas tree, Treecycling is an easy way to return a renewable and natural source back to the environment instead of disposing it in a landfill, where decomposition rates are slowed due to lack of oxygen.  El Paso County would like to partner with the community to promote usage of live potted Christmas Trees by accepting these trees after the Holiday to plant in the El Paso County Parks and other County Facilities in a community “treecycling” program in need of some flora.
Fiscal Impact:None
